Overview

Fire Magic and Staff is the most popular solo ranged build in Project Gorgon. Fire Magic provides devastating AoE damage, powerful single-target nukes, and the Calefaction debuff that amplifies all subsequent Fire damage by 20%. Staff provides the survivability Fire mages desperately need — Blocking Stance grants near-immunity to physical damage and Deflective Spin reduces all incoming damage by a percentage.

This combination solves Fire Magic's biggest weakness: fragility. Without Staff's defensive toolkit, fire mages are glass cannons that crumble when enemies close to melee range. With it, you're nearly unkillable while dealing top-tier ranged damage. The trade-off is Power management — Fire Magic is extremely Power-hungry, and Flesh to Fuel (converting HP to Power) becomes a core part of your rotation.

Strengths

  • Top-tier ranged AoE and single-target damage
  • Calefaction's +20% fire vulnerability debuff amplifies all subsequent Fire attacks
  • Staff's Blocking Stance and Deflective Spin make you nearly unkillable
  • Combat Refresh from Fireball and Smash provides steady sustain
  • Strong in both solo and group content

Weaknesses

  • Extremely Power-hungry — Flesh to Fuel (HP→Power conversion) is mandatory
  • Fire damage causes monsters to build Rage 2x faster, triggering their special attacks sooner
  • Many creatures resist Fire damage — check Monster Weaknesses guide for specific zones
  • Fire Breath requires closing to short range, momentarily exposing you

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Staff instead of Psychology or Ice Magic?
Staff's Blocking Stance and Deflective Spin provide survivability that no other secondary skill matches. Psychology offers utility (CC, healing) but you're squishy. Ice Magic adds more damage but both are elemental, and you still lack defense. Staff makes you nearly unkillable — the community consensus is that Fire/Staff is the best mid-to-endgame solo ranged build.
How do I manage Fire Magic's Power costs?
Flesh to Fuel converts HP to Power — use it aggressively, then heal up with food or Combat Refresh. Carry Power-restoring food and potions. In groups, ask your Mentalism user for Psi Power Wave. Fireball costs zero Power, so you always have a free attack when empty.
Is Fire Magic good in groups?
Excellent for AoE damage in dungeon groups. Be aware that fire causes 2x Rage generation on monsters, which can trigger dangerous rage attacks sooner. Coordinate with your tank on pull timing.
