Overview

Staff and Shield is the most common and well-rounded tanking combination in Project Gorgon. Shield provides the core tanking toolkit — taunt generation via Infuriating Bash and Fight Me You Fools, armor restoration via Reinforce, and crowd control via Stunning Bash. Staff adds percentage-based damage mitigation through Blocking Stance and Deflective Spin, plus steady self-sustain via Combat Refresh.

Tanking in PG revolves around the taunt system: taunt adds to your damage for threat purposes, determining who monsters attack. Shield has the deepest taunt toolkit of any skill. Staff complements it with survivability that Hammer, Unarmed, or other offensive secondaries cannot match, which is why Staff/Shield is the community's go-to tank build.

Strengths

  • Deepest taunt toolkit in the game (single-target, AoE, and persistent taunt from Shield)
  • Percentage-based mitigation from Blocking Stance and Deflective Spin
  • Self-sustaining via Combat Refresh — reduces healer dependency
  • Straightforward rotation — well-documented in the community
  • Stunning Bash provides reliable crowd control

Weaknesses

  • Lower DPS than dedicated damage builds — kill speed is slow solo
  • Requires a shield in off-hand, limiting weapon options
  • Gear-dependent — needs specific treasure mods to tank endgame content
  • Positioning matters for AoE taunt (Fight Me You Fools)

Key Abilities

Primary single-target taunt. Forces an enemy to focus on you. Use on cooldown against priority targets.

AoE taunt that hits and knocks back all nearby enemies. Essential for grabbing aggro on dungeon pulls.

Stuns the target. Use for crowd control on dangerous enemies or to interrupt attacks.

ReinforceShield

Restores your armor mid-combat. Armor depletes as you take hits, so active restoration is critical.

Defensive stance that mitigates physical damage. The first few seconds grant near-immunity to physical attacks.

Reduces all incoming damage by a percentage for several seconds. Your core sustained mitigation tool.

Staff-based taunt that surprises enemies ignoring you. Additional threat management from your Staff side.

SmashStaff

Zero-cost basic Staff attack. Triggers Combat Refresh for HP/armor/Power sustain between cooldowns.

Treasure Mod Recommendations

Shield BoostHead, Off Hand

Boosts all Shield ability damage, which directly increases taunt generation.

Restores armor on Bash hits, significantly improving sustained survivability.

Staff BoostHead, Main Hand

Boosts all Staff damage including defensive abilities for better threat.

Enhances HP/armor/Power recovery from Combat Refresh on Staff attacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tank with other skill combinations?
Staff/Shield is the most common, but Cow/Unarmed and Ice Magic/Shield are also viable endgame tank builds. Cow/Unarmed trades Shield's taunt toolkit for superior self-healing and unique mitigation. Ice Magic/Shield adds control through slows and freezes.
How does the taunt system work?
Taunt adds to your damage for threat purposes. If you have 50 taunt and deal 100 damage, monsters treat it as 150 damage for aggro. Shield abilities like Infuriating Bash add large temporary taunt spikes. Maintaining aggro means consistently applying taunt abilities.
How important is armor restoration?
Very important. Armor depletes as you take hits and provides 1 point of damage mitigation per 25 armor remaining. Reinforce and Combat Refresh are your main ways to restore it. Without active restoration, your effective HP drops rapidly.
